Grand Monument in Østre Anlæg

The Denmark Monument (Danmarksmonumentet) is located in Østre Anlæg park in Copenhagen and was erected to commemorate the golden wedding anniversary of King Christian IX and Queen Louise in 1892.

The monument was unveiled in 1897 and created by sculptor Louis Hasselriis. It appears as a monumental sculptural group featuring a female figure, often referred to as “Mother Denmark,” surrounded by symbols representing the nation, including the lions from the Danish coat of arms and other emblematic figures. Originally placed in front of the National Gallery of Denmark, the monument was relocated in 1919 to its current position in Østre Anlæg, where it stands as a reminder of the royal celebration and the monumental artistic ideals of the era.

The Denmark Monument is slightly hidden within Østre Anlæg, but it is well worth a visit when spending time in the park. Due to its size, the monument is best experienced from a short distance, where the surrounding trees provide a beautiful green backdrop to the sculpture.
