Memorial to Prime Minister Stauning
The Stauning Monument (Stauning Monumentet) at Staunings Plads in Copenhagen was erected in memory of Thorvald Stauning, Denmark’s first Social Democratic Prime Minister.
The monument was unveiled in 1964 and created by sculptor August Keil. The monument is formed as a square block with reliefs on all sides. One long side depicts a crowd of people, while the opposite side shows six nude men – workers engaged in the construction of a building. The Stauning Monument highlights Stauning’s significant role in social reforms and the advancement of workers’ rights in Denmark and stands as an important political memorial in the urban landscape of Staunings Plads.
