Copper Sculpture of Muscular Strength

The Titan statue (Titan-statuen) is a copper and zinc sculpture located on the square between Store Kongensgade and Grønningen. It was created by sculptor Nicolai Outzen Schmidt and unveiled in 1899.

The statue is a copy of the original version located at Carlsberg. It depicts the Titan Atlas from Greek mythology, carrying the heavens on his shoulders as punishment after the war against the supreme god, Zeus. The monument is part of Copenhagen’s artistic landscape and offers insight into the aesthetics and ideals of the period.

Titan is best viewed from the small cobblestone square in front, where the iconic yellow Nyboder buildings are on one side and the edge of Kastellet on the other. The statue looks especially striking in the late afternoon when the sun illuminates the golden sphere.
