Christian IV Statue at Nyboder

A monument and tribute to a historic king

Christian IV Statue (Christian IV-statuen) at Nyboder in Copenhagen depicts King Christian IV and was created by sculptor Vilhelm Bissen. The completed work was unveiled in 1900.

The statue shows the king standing at the entrance to Nyboder, which he himself founded in 1631 as housing for naval personnel and their families.

The monument honours Christian IV’s major contributions to Copenhagen and Danish architecture and serves as a central historical landmark in the neighbourhood. The Nyboder statue is one of two statues of Christian IV in Copenhagen, the other being located at Børsen.

The statue is best experienced from the small square in front of it, where the large tree and Nyboder’s iconic yellow and red buildings create an atmospheric backdrop. As the statue faces north, it is best viewed earlier in the day if sunlight is to illuminate the figure from the front.
