The Lakes
An iconic water environment in Copenhagen
The Lakes in Copenhagen consist of three connected artificial lakes – Sortedams Lake, Peblinge Lake, and Sankt Jørgens Lake – which run through the Inner City.
The lakes were created in the 17th century as part of the city’s defensive system, but today they serve as a popular recreational area. Along the lake shores are walking paths, running routes, and green spaces used by both locals and tourists for walks, jogging, and relaxation. The area is known for its beautiful surroundings, bridge connections, and urban nature, providing a peaceful oasis in the city. The lakes also attract birdlife and are a popular spot for photography and enjoying nature without leaving Copenhagen. With its central location, The Lakes are an important recreational and cultural feature of the city’s landscape.

The Lakes stretch over several kilometers, offering plenty of beautiful spots from which to admire both the water and the surrounding city. Among our favorites are the viewpoints at the Søpavillonen and Dronning Louises Bridge, where the symmetrical and charming buildings rise up as a gateway to the Inner City.
