Holmen Cemetery

Old cemetery with historical significance

Holmen Cemetery is Copenhagens oldest cemetery, established in 1666 in the Østerbro district.

The cemetery was originally created as a burial site for indigent sailors in royal service and their families. Today, it is a peaceful park with winding paths, green spaces, and historical monuments. The cemetery also houses a chapel in Nordic stave church style, built in 1902 by architect Ludvig Fenger. Additionally, there is a memorial for the fallen sailors from the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, designed by Johannes Wiedewelt. Holmen Cemetery is open to the public and used by both locals and tourists for peaceful walks and as a historical resting place.
