De Syv Aksler

Modern urban sculpture at Axeltorv

De Syv Aksler (The Seven Shafts) is a modern monument located at Axeltorv in Copenhagen, situated between Cirkusbygningen and the Palads Theatre.

The sculpture was unveiled in 1987 and consists of seven vertical shaftes arranged in a geometric formation, made of steel, iron, and granite. The shaftes symbolise movement, urban life, and city dynamics. Created by artist Robert Jacobsen, the monument represents minimalist and modern sculpture in Copenhagen’s public space. According to the artist himself, the work also serves as a collective memorial to the escape of Danish Jews to Sweden in 1943.

De Syv Aksler stands prominently in the square and is hard to miss. It is best experienced with the colourful Palads Theatre in the background, which creates a striking contrast to the dark, monochrome axes.
