The Black Diamond
A modern library and architectural landmark
The Black Diamond (Den Sorte Diamant) is located on Slotsholmen by Copenhagen Harbour and is a modern extension of the Royal Danish Library.
The building was build in 1999 and is known for its distinctive black granite facade, smooth glass surfaces, and angular, diamond-like design, creating a striking modern contrast in the historic city district. Inside, it offers bright reading rooms, exhibition spaces, and auditoriums, while the large foyer with a glass floor provides views of the harbor and surrounding historic buildings. The Black Diamond serves as a library, cultural center, and exhibition space, acting as a hub for students, residents, and tourists alike.

The building faces the open harbor, making it easy to spot. The best viewpoints, however, are either from Lille Langebro or from the opposite side by the Circle Bridge. You also shouldn’t miss walking the street through the Black Diamond, where the architecture becomes even more striking.
