Equestrian Statue of Frederik VII
Historic statue in front of Christiansborg
The equestrian statue of Frederik VII (Rytterstatuen af Frederik VII) stands in front of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. It was created by sculptor Herman Wilhelm Bissen and unveiled in 1873.
The statue depicts Frederik VII on horseback in a realistic pose, dressed in royal uniform, symbolising his significance as king during the introduction of the Danish Constitution in 1849. The equestrian statue serves as a central historical element in front of Christiansborg and is cast in bronze on a granite plinth. It is an example of 19th-century monumental sculpture and commemorates a pivotal period in Denmark’s democratic development.
