Equestrian Statue of Absalon

Monument to Copenhagen’s founder

The equestrian statue of Bishop Absalon (Rytterstatuen af biskop Absalon) stands at Højbro Plads in central Copenhagen and was erected in 1902 to mark the 700th anniversary of Absalon’s death.

The statue depicts Absalon as a military leader on horseback, clad in armour and holding a sword, with his gaze directed towards Christiansborg Palace, where his fortress once stood. The sculpture was created by sculptor Vilhelm Bissen, with the pedestal designed by architect Martin Nyrop. The monument honours Absalon, who as Bishop of the city of Roskilde and later as the city’s leader is widely recognised as the founder of Copenhagen.

Thanks to its prominent central location, the equestrian statue can be viewed from all angles around Højbro Plads and the northern part of Christiansborg Palace Square. For the most symmetrical and atmospheric perspective, it is best viewed from the top of Højbro Plads, where the trees form an elegant frame and Christiansborg Palace provides a magnificent backdrop.
