Jarmers Plads

Historic and central square in Copenhagen

Jarmers Plads (Jarmers Square) is a central and historic square in Copenhagen’s Inner City, close to Ørstedsparken and City Hall Square.

The modest square is located on the site where Jarmers Tower once stood, one of eleven towers that were part of Copenhagen’s medieval fortifications. The tower was built in the early 16th century as part of the city’s defenses but was partially demolished during urban expansions in the 17th century. The remaining ruin, still visible on the square, is an important remnant of Copenhagen’s old city wall and serves as a historic monument to the city’s defensive structure. Today, Jarmers Plads functions mainly as a traffic hub, with its historical aspect somewhat in the background, making the square and its well-preserved ruin a true hidden historical gem. In front of the ruin stands the sculpture “Lion and Lioness”, erected in 1889, symbolizing the power of nature.
