Historic church with royal ceremonies

Holmen Church, located on Slotsholmen near Christiansborg Palace, is one of Copenhagen’s most historic and atmospheric churches.

Originally built in 1563 as an anchor forge and later transformed into a church by King Christian IV in 1619, Holmen Church has long been associated with the Danish Navy and seafaring traditions. Designed in Renaissance style, the church features beautiful wood carvings, marble details, and a peaceful interior. It has also hosted major royal events, including the wedding of King Frederik and Queen Mary in 2004. Today, Holmen Church remains an active parish church and a living symbol of Denmark’s maritime and royal heritage. A visit offers a unique look into Copenhagen’s architectural, naval, and royal past.
