Stormbroen

Historic defense bridge by Slotsholmen

Stormbroen (The Storm Bridge) is one of Copenhagen’s oldest and most historically significant bridges, located at Frederiksholms Kanal by Slotsholmen, close to Christiansborg Palace.

The current bridge was completed in 1918, but a crossing has existed here since the 17th century, when the area formed part of Copenhagen’s defensive structures. The bridge is named after the storming of Copenhagen in 1659 during the Danish-Swedish wars, when Swedish forces attacked the city’s fortifications near this point. The present stone bridge was built as a memorial to this event, and a plaque on the balustrade commemorates the defense of the city. Today, Stormbroen serves as an important connection between the Inner City and Slotsholmen while offering scenic views of Frederiksholms Kanal, historic buildings, and the squares around Christiansborg Palace.

The best view of Stormbroen is actually from another bridge, Marmorbroen, where you get an almost picturesque view of the old bridge with the charming, colourful houses of Nybrogade in the background.
