Dragespringvandet

Historic fountain at the City Hall Square

Dragespringvandet (The Dragon Fountain) is located on the City Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen) in Copenhagen and was constructed in 1904 as part of the square’s decorative design.

The fountain depicts a bull fighting a dragon, with three smaller dragons seated around the edge, spouting water. It was created by Joakim Skovgaard and Thorvald Bindesbøll and was originally intended for Amagertorv, but lost the design competition in 1889 to the Stork Fountain. Over the years, the fountain has been relocated several times within City Hall Square – most recently in 2023, when it returned to its current position after a major restoration.

Dragespringvandet is easy to spot when visiting City Hall Square. It is at its most impressive early in the morning or later in the evening, when the sun is low and the square is less crowded.
