Copenhagen Courthouse

A historic courthouse and prominent building

Copenhagen Courthouse (Københavns Domhus) is located at Nytorv in the heart of Copenhagen and serves as the courthouse for Copenhagen City Court and, in special cases, the Supreme Court.

The building was constructed between 1805 and 1815 and served as the city hall for nearly 100 years before this function was taken over by the current city hall. The impressive building is designed in the Neoclassical style with symmetrical façades, tall columns, and detailed entrance sections, giving it a formal and authoritative appearance. The building’s front is adorned with the inscription: “Med lov skal man land bygge” (“With law shall the land be built”). Inside, there are courtrooms, offices, and auditoriums for judges and administration. The courthouse combines solid construction and historic style with modern functionality, making it an important element of Copenhagen’s cityscape.
