Christianshavns Canal

Historic canal surrounded by life

Christianshavns Canal was established in the early 1600s by King Christian IV as part of his plan to expand Copenhagen’s harbor.

The canal separates Christianshavn from Holmen and stretches from Trangraven in the north to the main harbor near Langebro in the south. Along the canal, you’ll find the characteristic streets Overgaden oven Vandet and Overgaden neden Vandet, which date back to the city’s original foundation. The area is known for its colorful buildings, cozy cafés, and active boating life with houseboats and sailboats. Christianshavns Canal is a popular spot for both locals and tourists who want to experience Copenhagen’s maritime atmosphere and cultural diversity.

It is almost impossible to highlight a single viewpoint along Christianshavn Canal as better than the others, since there are so many to choose from. Among the favorites, however, are the views from Trangravsbroen and Snorrebro.
