Equestrian Statue of Christian V
Historic monument in Copenhagen
The equestrian statue of Christian V (Rytterstatuen af Christian V) is centrally located at Kongens Nytorv and was created by sculptor Abraham-César Lamoureux and erected in 1688. The statue depicts King Christian V on horseback, dressed in uniform and armour in Baroque style.
The horse’s hooves rest on a reclining figure – a structural solution used to ensure greater stability and balance during construction. The monument marks Kongens Nytorv as Copenhagen’s central square and symbolises royal power as well as the city’s historical development.
The equestrian statue is one of the oldest of its kind in Denmark and forms a key element of the square’s architecture and urban space.

Placed majestically at the very centre of the impressive Kongens Nytorv, the statue can be viewed from all corners of the square. However, to fully appreciate the many fine details, binoculars or a zoom lens are recommended, as there are approximately 20 metres from the surrounding fence to the statue itself.
