Statue of Denmark’s fairy tale author

The Hans Christian Andersen Monument is a statue in Copenhagen, located in the heart of the Kings Garden (Kongens Have) and surrounded by green hedges.

It depicts the Danish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen, renowned for his world-famous fairy tales, and was created in bronze by sculptor August V. Saabye. The statue was unveiled in 1880 and shows Andersen seated with a book, highlighting his significance as a writer and his contribution to Danish literature. This monument is one of two sculptures of H.C. Andersen in Copenhagen and symbolises the city’s close connection to his life and literary legacy, which has left a lasting mark on world literature.

As the monument is partially concealed by hedges, visitors need to approach it closely to fully appreciate the sculpture. For a more symmetrical perspective, the monument can also be viewed from further down Damegangen, the tree-lined avenue leading up to the statue.
