David Statue

Biblical sculpture in Copenhagen

The David Statue (Statuen af David) stands directly by the waterfront in front of the Royal Cast Collection on Toldbodgade and is a bronze cast of the original David statue from Italy.

The sculpture was donated by Carl Jacobsen in 1896 and has had several different locations around Copenhagen before reaching its current position. The classical statue depicts the biblical figure of David in an idealised form, inspired by Renaissance sculptural traditions. The monument is located in a public area close to the harbour, where it serves both as an artistic focal point and as a historical reference to classical sculpture in Copenhagen.

The statue of David is placed on an open square facing Copenhagen Harbor and is oriented towards the southeast, allowing it to be beautifully illuminated by the sunlight. The red brick facade of the Royal Cast Collection provides a calm and uniform backdrop, allowing the main subject – the statue of David – to stand out clearly.
