The Maritime Monument

Memorial of the Danish maritime history

The Maritime Monument (Søfartsmonumentet) is located by the marina at Langelinie, not far from Kastellet and The Little Mermaid, and was erected in honour of Danish sailors and the importance of seafaring to Denmark.

The monument was created in 1928 by sculptor Svend Rathsack and consists of a diamond-shaped platform decorated with a series of narrative maritime reliefs along its sides. At the top stands a winged female figure, inspired by the classical ancient sculpture Nike of Samothrace. The monument symbolises respect for the sailors who worked at sea, both in times of peace and war, and highlights the central role of maritime activity in Denmark’s economy and cultural identity.

The Maritime Monument is often overlooked, as many visitors do not venture further north than The Little Mermaid, but it is well worth a visit. The monument is best appreciated from a slight distance, allowing the full height and form of the winged figure to be taken in.
