Historic fountain in Copenhagen
Caritasbrønden (The Caritas Fountain) is a historic fountain and water feature located at Gammeltorv in Copenhagen, erected in 1608 during the reign of King Christian IV.
The fountain features a sandstone figure of a woman holding a child, symbolising Caritas (love and charity) and humanistic virtues. The figure stands on a base with water basins, which historically supplied water to the city’s residents. Caritasbrønden is one of Copenhagen’s oldest monuments and has undergone several restorations, most recently in 1996. The fountain reflects the artistic ideals of the Renaissance and Christian IV’s ambition to embellish the city with monumental water installations and refined public spaces.
