Gefionspringvandet
Mythological fountain in Copenhagen
Gefionspringvandet (The Gefion Fountain) is a large fountain and monument in Copenhagen, located at Langelinie near Kastellet.
It was created by sculptor Anders Bundgaard and unveiled in 1908 as a gift from the Carlsberg Foundation to mark the brewery’s 50th anniversary. The fountain depicts the Nordic goddess Gefion, who according to legend ploughed the island of Zealand free from Sweden with the help of her four sons, whom she transformed into oxen. The scene is rendered as a dramatic and richly detailed sculptural composition, featuring powerful animal figures in bronze and stone. Gefionspringvandet is considered one of Copenhagen’s largest and most monumental works from the early 20th century.
