The Toldbod Building
Historic harbor building and headquarter
The Toldbod Building (Toldbodbygningen) at Nordre Toldbod is one of Copenhagen’s most distinctive historic harbour buildings and today serves as the headquarters of By & Havn.
The building was constructed in 1868 as the administrative office of the Harbour Authority and was designed in a style inspired by Italian Renaissance architecture, visible in its symmetrical facades, elegant window details and classical proportions. The adjoining inspection building and annex structures contribute to the architectural ensemble and reflect the area’s historic role as Copenhagen’s official customs and harbour entry point. Today, the Toldbod Building stands as a characterful and central landmark in the harbour area, surrounded by the waterfront promenade, open water and the Royal Pavilions located right beside it.

The building is best viewed from the small mole close to Toldboden, where the sculpture Zinkglobal stands. You can also enjoy a beautiful symmetrical perspective from the steps down to the water between the two Royal Pavilions.
