Church in the heart of Christianshavn
Christians Church, located in the center of Christianshavn in Copenhagen, is one of the city’s most architecturally distinctive and culturally vibrant churches.
Built between 1754 and 1759 as a German Reformed church, it was designed by architect Nicolai Eigtved in the Baroque style with inspiration from theatre architecture. Inside, the church features a tall, open nave with tiered balconies along the sides, creating a space that feels both sacred and performative – ideal for concerts as well as worship. The sandstone and brick façade, topped with a slender tower and copper spire, gives the church a striking and elegant presence. Today, Christians Church serves both as a parish church and cultural venue, known for classical concerts, children’s theatre, and cross-cultural events. It is a space where spirituality, art, and community meet in harmony.

Christians Church is beautifully and symmetrically positioned at the end of Strandgade, making it visible from anywhere along the street. However, the most perfectly symmetrical view is from the opposite side of the church, where the apartment buildings on either side of David Balfours Gade create a stunning axis leading directly to the magnificent church.
